Children in Foster Care in Missouri

  • Every day, children are removed from their families because of neglect or abuse.
  • There is a growing need for families willing to open their hearts and homes to children and teenagers.
  • We need families that will walk with children during a time of crisis and welcome them unconditionally into their lives.

Foster Care

Foster care is providing a temporary and loving home for a child who is not able to live with his or her biological parents due to abuse or neglect. There is no specific time that children spend in foster care – on average, a child spends approximately 2 years in foster care. The goal is always reunification with the biological family after the reason for removal is fixed.

Foster parents help children by taking care of them as if they were their own – getting them ready for life, providing emotional support and essential needs, and loving them unconditionally. Foster families provide a safe and nurturing home while the parents receive supportive services to regain custody of their children.

When the biological parental rights are terminated, children become eligible for adoption though the court system. When reunification is not an option, children are in need of a new family. More than 100,000 children in the United States foster care system are eligible for adoption.

Domestic Adoption

Private adoptions take place when a birth parent voluntarily places their child for adoption directly with the family of their choice. Parents who want to adopt a baby through private adoption often wait between 6 months to 2 years to be matched with a birth mother. With private adoption, hopeful parents pay for legal services, the birth mother expenses during pregnancy, travel for the birth, and other services – averaging between $20,000 – $35,000. Grants are available through agencies.

Here are several questions to consider when picking out an adoption agency:

  • Do the agency’s values match up to your standards?
  • Are there any complaints filed against the agency?
  • Does the agency offer additional training and support groups?
  • What additional services are offered?

International Adoption

Adopting a child from another country is another option to grow your family! Most children adopted internationally are primarily orphaned due to poverty and live in both government-run and privately established orphanages. We believe that every child is a gift from our Lord. Many are considered disabled due to small things such as cleft palate/cleft lip or birth marks. A child that is over 5 years old can be considered special needs simply because of his/her age.

International adoptions can take up to 2 years to complete and cost anywhere between $40,000 – $70,000. There are different regulations based on the country that you feel God is leading you to adopt from. The Cherish Kids Team and the adoption agency will educate you about the country, safety, and travel requirements.

Prayerfully consider the questions you would like answered and discuss them with our team!
